It is now a matter, of stage history that "The Belle of.New York," when produced by Mr Musgrove at the London Shaftesbury, established one of the record runs of the century. Eight performances a week were given for a year and ten months, and the receipts were such as had not been known in musical pieces since "Les Cloches de Corneville" was first staged. As illustrating the comparative ease of managing a London theatre when once a success has been sctored as compared with Australia, Mr Musgrove states that throughout that period he hardly visited the Shaftesbury once a month. In his own words, "I knew all the house could possibly hold, aiid I ex* pected the nightly return to show that result, which it invariably did. Unfortunately, quite such astounding successes seldom occur twice in a life-* time."
