BOROUGH MEETINGS.

The fortnightly meeting of flic Onehunga Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Dr. W. R. Close Erson) in the chair, aod Crs. Golledge, Brown, Yates, Shaldrick, Hill, McLeod, Bradley.

Tenders. —Two lenders were received for the supply of ciog collars and re-plating' old collars, viz., J. G. Jeffrey, scl per collar, and l_d for replating; and E. B. "Wright, at 5d for collars and Id for replating.—The latter was accepted.

Coal Supply.—Three tenders were received for the supply of coal for the pumping station, viz., J. J. Craig, Taupiri t-0.-il 17/, Ngunguru 19/. nnd Hikurangi 18/; G. Moody, Taupiri, 15/0; J. J. Russell, Taupiri 14/9. Ngunguru 19/3. and Hikurangi 18/.—The tender ot Mr J. J. Russell was accepted for the supply of Taupiri coal.

Recreation Reserve. —Tlie tender of Mr W. Tapp of £44 per annum for the lease of the recreation reserve for 12 months wtp accepted. Lessee's Compmint.—Messrs Wynyard and Purchas wrote on behalf of Mr Thos. McGehan. lessee of the recreation reserve, drawing the Council's attention to the action of a Mr Vause, who, it was stated, to gain/access to the reserve, removed the gate. They requested the Council to take some steps to prevent recurrence of similar trouble. —On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Col ledge, the letter was. referred to the Council in Committee to report upon.

(las Lamps. —Mr E. B. Parson, secretary of the Auckland CI as Company. wrote acknowledging- receipt of the Council's request for n supply of gas to new lamps erected in Onehunga. He pointed out that there wasi some misunderstanding over the matter, as the company are under no obligation to supply gas to any lamps in a. position which the Council may choose. He quoted clause 2 of the memorandum of agreement, which provides that the supply of gas has to be agreed upon between bis company and the Council. Tlie Mayor moved that the letter be referred' to tbe Council in Committee. | Cr. Colledge seconded. Cr. Bradley considered that the company should provide gas to places where the Council were, willing to erect lamps. Street li"btin»- was necessary, and was being ptishedon by the Council, and the (las Company should assist ln furthering tt—Tlie*motion was agreed to. Cycling Club.-Mr W. H. Morton, iunr.. wrote enclosing the following resolution of tho Onehunga Cycling Club- "That the secretary write to tho Onehunga Borough- Council asking .them before, letting the Waikara Keserve to set apart, say, six to eight acres opposite Cr. Colledge's residence so that a cricket ground, cycling a-nd running track could be laid out in the near future." Referred to the Reserves Committee lo consider and report. Water Consumption.—Tbe turncock reported that during the fortnight ending- Bee-ember Sth 1,200,000 gallons of water bad been pumped to the reservoir. , . ~r—Mr 0. Easton wrote m reply to the Council's communication stating that he had forwarded his report of the audit of the borough's accounts direct to the Auditor-General, to whom it should be addressed. Financial Statement.—-The town clerk read the usual fortnightly financial statement, after which accounts amounting to £371 19/9 were passed for payment. Blue Metal.—The foreman of works reported that the metal contractor had completed his Work, the total number of yards broken being 1339, which was valued at £410. Town Clock.—Tlie matter of lighting the town clock was deferred till next meeting, the Mayor and Crs. McLeod and James to make arrangements. Request Granted.—The Council in committee recommended that tlie request of Mr J. B. Graham, viz., that Mr Corkhill's contract for breaking spauls be. rescinded as requested. The Mayor pointed out that the case was one which should be dealt with as suggested. The motion was carried. ° Cattle on Streets—The Mayor moved upon notice, "That the Reserves Committee be asked to bring up a report as to the requirements necessary to place Mount Smart Reserve in a proper state to enable the Council to call for tenders for leasing the same for grazing cattle, and that public notice be given that from January Ist, 1901, no cattle or horses be pastured On tlie streets." Cr. Bradley seconded the resolution, which was carried by live to i three. • Councillors' Attendance.—Cr. _ates moved and it was carried "That the town clerk draw up a report showing the attendance of each member of the Council during the year." • Motions.—Cr. Hill moved (a), "That not more than one poll clerk be employed at a municipal election,-except by pel-mission of the Council; (b) that a committee consisting of Crs Riowe, Shaldrick, and McLeod be appointed to supervise the burgess roll, and that no name be taken oft' or put on the roll without the consent of the said committee; (c) that a list of defaulters of rates and rents bft placed upojo th» table." Tbe first two resolutions were ruled out of order, and the third was withdrawn. Cr. Shaldrick moved (a) "That in addition to the usual financial statement being read by the town clerk at the meetings of the Council there also be read a statement showing the amount of rates and rents recoverable; and (b) giving the cost of works under contract." In supporting the motion the Mayor pointed out that while the general account was overdrawn, now less than £420 worth of blue metal bad been broken and was on hand, while in rates there was still a sum of over £400 to be collected in addition to rents still unpaid. The resolution was carried, Cr. Yates protesting against what she characterised as an unwarrantable motion. Notice of Motion.—The Mayor gave notice to move, "That the Council in committee bring up a report as to the neees-isary repairs required for placing Mount Smart Reserve in a satisfactory condition for grazing, and that tenders be called for completing the work." Also, "That applications be invited for the position of ranger." Mrs Yates gave notice to move, (a) "That tbe town clerk be instructed to write to the Government Local Bodies Loans Department, asking what is" the lowest rate of interest, at .which they will lend money' to pay off our present 'loan of £4GOO. Also, describing what our securities are, and income and profits derived from waterworks; (b) that the town clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Russell and Campbell asking what legal notice (if any) will be re-

quired to be given to the bondholders re paying off the loan ot £4600 on the waterworks."
