A NOTABLE CRIMINAL BAND.
A few days ago at Palmi, a little town on the Calubre.se shore of the Straits of Messina, a trial, which baa attracted general attention, was brought to a conclusion. The prisoners at the bar—or, rather, in the huge iron cage which is the substitute for the bar in Italian tribunals— were 300, all "piceiotti," young people of both sexes residing in different parts of Calabria and living on theft and blackmail under the guidance of a veteran criminal, Carmine Ricevuto. The director of the gang, Ricevuto, Avas condemned to eight years solitary confinement. Eighty five were acquitted, and the rest sentenced to A*arious periods amounting in the aggregate to 842 years.
