THE VICTORS TO THE VANQUISHED
"Small clews draw vastest weights along. Not ln their bulk, but in their order strong."
DRYDEN.
Brothers! Help us bind the band That knit you to our nation; Tough the knot and stout tho strand Wrought for its formation. With sympathy for golden clew Twined in and out, and through and through. Brothers who so bravely fought Through crimson seas of sorrow, Cease from strife, or victory bought. May bring a sterner morrow; Lay down thine arms, and let thy pride Be drowned in love both deep and wide. Boer and Briton, each must learn— While the few divining, Know that while the earth doth turn The sun is In heaven shining, And girdling in his warm embrace Both weak and great of every race. Broad humanity must rule, That those who rule may nourish; Powers in turn be brought to school, That peaceful arts may flourish And turn, wherever Empire spread. Our "thin red line" to silken thread, i O.C.L. Auckland, October, 1900.
