PAEROA, this clay
At the Warden's Court to-day the, following additional residence sites were granted by Mr Warden Bush: — Ethel Chitham, section 2GO, Waihi South; W. J. Gray, 1 acre, Waihi; Chas. Lawrence, section 581, at Waihi; M. Darlington, section 487,1 Famora-street; John Livesey, section 1261, Waihi South; John Woodham, section 235, Waihi South; Ernest Tibby, section 254, Waihi South; Chas. J. Harrod, section 405, Waihi; Esther llarrot, . section 404, Waihi; Alfred James, section 581; William Dodds, section 302; A. Morton Walmsley, i acre; Geo. Grice, section 22, Bulltown; James McDonnell, I acre; Fred. Jackson, section 262, Waihi South; Sarah Downs, section 122, Bulltown; Jno. Johns, section 96, Waihi Sont*h; C. P. Butcher, section 62, at Waihi. An interesting case is likely to occupy the Warden's Court at its next sitting on December 19th, in which the question of the precedence of an application for a special claim over one for a prospecting license will probably be decided. The case was cited to-day in the shape of applications by Messrs E. Banks Eoache and Stafford for three prospecting areas of 100 acres each. These areas are situated to the north-east of the Waihi Extended and adjacent claims, and are in close proximity to the town-
ship of. Waihi. W. Eddowes, who has a subsequent application in for a special claim overlapping the above prospecting areas or parts of them, has lodged" an objection to their grant, and to-day asked for an adjournment till next Court day in order that his (Eddowes) evidence might be taken at the Thames. Mr Clendon appeared for Mr Eddowes, and Mr. Miller, in conjunction with Mr Jackson, for the, applicants. Mr Miller strongly objected to the adjournment, pointing out that his clients were prior applicants, but Mr Clendon contended that it was absurd to think of granting prospecting areas so close to Waihi' and where" reefs were known to traverse the ground. The adjournment was granted. During the discussion the Warden remarked there were far too many prospecting- areas and not enough mining claims. A peculiar plaint for the grant of a residence site at Waihi as abandoned and unoccupied ground was heard by the Warden. The site in question has been occupied for 19 years by 'an old man named Harry Harper, who has a nice garden, ornamental trees, house and stable, but because one side was unfenced to allow of persons passing to and from the Silverton battery, two young men lodged an application for the ground as unoccupied. The evidence of Mr Harper showed that three years ago through misfortune he had to surrender this section and it was granted to Mr A. J Thorpe, an old friend of his, and Harper had resided there ever since a free agent, and was to reside there as' long as he lived. The Warden promptly refused the application tor the ground.
