THE ISLAND TRADE.
The Union Steamship Company's Southern Cross arrived here this morning, having ben running for the past three years between the Society Islands and;the Paumotu ,'ancl Marquesas Group, under the French flag* Itis understood that the French Government will renew the contract, but the Kia Ora will replace the Southern Cross. '
PRECAUTIONS.AGAINST OVERLOADING.
Stringent measures are being1 taken by the Custom-house officers in Wellington, in examining the deck loads of steamers coming- from coastal ports with timber, in order to see that the regulations are complied Avith. Each vessel is closely inspected on. berthing at the wharf. NEW LABOUR UNION. The Amalgamated Society of Coolcs and Waiters is among- the latest unions formed here. It has a membership of 70, and will to-day discuss rates of pay, hours of work, etc. MAIL SERVICES. The Secretary .of the Wellington: Chamber of Commerce has been informed by the Postmaster-General that the Government have not lost sight of maintaining a regular fortnightly communication with Sydney) for the conveyance of mails to connect with the P. and O. service. THE DRIVERS' UNION. The Employers' Association ihavei appointed a committee representing all classes to consider the demands made by the Drivers' Union, and draw, up suggestions, which will: be. satisfactory to the employers as a whole. \
