Advice has been received that the Harlec'h Castle with the returning troopers leaves Sydney for Dunedin direct on the 15th inst.
DUN EDIX, Wednesday
A public meeting, convened by the Mayor, was held to-night to take step.", to welcome the soldiers returning by the Harlech Castle.
•The, Premier, in reply to a telegram from the Mayor, telegraphed:—"No truth in the report that the men will be transferred to the Moan'a. If so important a change had been agreed upon by the Imperial authorities. I feel sure they would have notified the j\ rew Zealand Government. lt was suggested by Lieutenant Hughes that they should be transferred, but I intimated thai we declined."
It was resolved to accord the returning troopers an enthusiastic welcome befitting their prowess in the field in South Africa, where they have shed lustre on the amis of Tier Majesty, and have done noble service in upholding l-he integrity of the Empire.
A Reception and Entertainment Committee was appointed, including the Mayors of all the boroughs, the. chairmen of County Council?, and members of Parliament for Ota-go and Southland.
