WELLINGTON, this day. VOLUNTEER OFFICERS' INSTRUCTION, i Major Owen receives £400 a year as commandant of the School of Instruction for Volunteer Officers. THE MINISTER FOR RAILWAYS. The Hon. J. G. Ward is accompanied on his visit to Auckland by Mr. Ronayne, General Manager of Railways, Mr. Coom, Chief Engineer, and Mr. A. L. Beattie, Locomotive Superintendent. THE STRATFORD LIGHT LINE. Mr. R. W. Holmes, Resident Engineer of Public Works, Wellington, has proceeded to Stratford, and will accompany the Minister of Works on an inspection of the proposed light line of railway between Stratford and Wangamomona, on the Main Trunk I railway. TARANAKI IRONSAND. On the suggestion of the Mines Department ten tons of ironsand are to be sent to Mr. Hedley J. P. Thomson, London, to enable a French scientist to experiment. THE FEDERAL CONTINGENT. Nearly seventy men will arrive in Wellington to join the contingent which goes to Sydney for the inaugural ceremonies in connection with the establishment of the Commonwealth. There are ten officers, six of whom will be lieutenants. The number of Maoris is to be increased. The men will be conveyed to and from between New Zealand and Sydney by the Government steamer Tutanekai.
