ST. MARY'S CONVENT, PONSONBY.

A most attractive fancy fair la now open at St. Mary's Convent, Ponsonby. The sale of work has been organised by the ladies of the Roman Oattfolic parishes in the city and suburbs in <srder to mark the jubilee of the arrival of the Sfsters of Mercy Order in Auckland. Bishop Lenihan, in declaring- the fair open, referred In terms of praise to the good work done by the Sisters during the last 50 years in teaching and training the young, and said that there could be no better proof of trie success of their methods than the display of work in the stalls. During- the afternoon and evening there were large attendances, and good business was done at the stalls, whicfi con-

tain a great variety of handsome and useful articles. The following ladles are in charge of the stalls:—Art union, Misses S. Lynch and Riven, assisted by Mrs Harris and Miss Jones; fancy goods. Miss Lynch and Mrs M. Brown, assisted by Misses Sainsbury arid Corbett; doITs. Mesdames Leonardo and Swan, assisted by Misses Regan and Corley; strawberries and cream, Mrs and Miss Lonergan; refreshments, Mesdames J. O'Brien, Haven. Mahon and Stichbury, assisted by Misses Haven, Wallnutt and Sheath; fancy goods, Mrs Dignan and Misses Hobbs and Mahoney. assisted by pupils of the Convent; candy, Misses McCafte

and Lundon; gipsy tent. Miss Outhwaite. The work of the pupils displayed-In the way of painting, wood-carving, etc., was exceedingly good.

In the afternoon Mr Hunter's band played some excellent musical selections on the lawn, and in the evening the Convent pupils gave a first-class entertainment. A cantata, "Violet in Fairyland," was performed by the children, and a Maypole dance and a pretty floral march were also given. The performances of the children showed that great credit was due to the Sisters for their careful and painstaking ui.TXti.

Duriae the evening: His Lordship the Bishop presented? prizes and certificates won by tho pupils at the Convent as follows:—To iuisses May SlcGuire and Ivy Anslcy, passed Junior Civil .Service Examination; Misses Matilda Brown. N. Lynch, li. Casey and Dempaey, passed <»ixth standard; Misses Alva Ralph, Gertrude Bray. Janie Amodeo, and Kisie Bray, certificates in preparatory grade at Trinity College, London, examination; Misses Ellen Brown and Matilda Brown, intermediate division, honours; Rita O'Suliivan, junior division, honours: Violet Fitzpatrick and Xellie Mahoney, junior division, pass.

The sale of work will remain open till Saturday night, and there will be a chang-e of programme each evening-.
