General Buller, on Saturday, attacked a precipitous ridge in horseshoe form, 1500 feet high, some 20 miles soiith-east of Lydenburg.
The road.lay at the furthest point, while deep ravines prevented a turning movement.
The position was gallantly carried under cover of the artillery. .
The Devons operated on the right, the Royal Irish in the centre, and the Royal Scots on the left.
The enemy retreated over a narrow causeway, losing heavily.
Their casualties would, however,
have been much greater had not a mist sheltered them. .
Shrapnel shell burst over a volunteer company and the Gordon Highlanders marching in column seven, miles from the enemy,' killing three and wounding seventeen.:
...It says much for the pluck of the troops that thoiigll inarching in close formation their steadiness was unimpaired by the wholly unexpected episode. The total British casualties in Buller's operations near Spitzkop were 13 killed and 25 wounded. General French's division, after the fighting in the vicinity of Dalmanutha and Machadodorp, marched south 35 miles to Carolina.
From there a north-easterly route •was taken for the advance on Barberton, 60 miles distant. ,
The division was steadily opposed, and thrice French had to dislodge the enemy..
On one occasion the Suffolks captured a position by a gallant charge. General French used 4.1. guns with good effect. .
