THE A.J.C. DERBY WINNER.

Maltster, the winner of this year's A.J.C. Derby comes from a successful racing family. He Was sired by the St. Simon stallion Bill of Portland from Barley, the latter being imported from "England by the late Mr Matthew O'Shanassy for his breeding stud at Riverina. Barley was one of . five' mares specially selected by the eminent Old Country trainer, Matthew Dawson, for the Riverina stud, and her dam, Lovely, won the Oaks. When a yearling Maltster was bought by Mr R. Orr, of Ballarat, his present owner, for 810 guineas. He is trained In the Victorian city named by J. Scoble. His performances as a two-year-old were creditable. He was first given a run at Caulfield in October in the Debutant Stakes, when he ran nowhere. He was then put by until the autumn period, when he came out at the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting and won the Hopeful Stakes and Ascot Vale Stakes, and he followed this up with seconds in the A.J.C. Champagne Stakes and Easter Stakes. The head lines of the pedigree of this promising three-year-old read:— ' MALTSTER' (bred in Victoria). Barley .
