Rhodes has been appointed general manager of 'the Auckland agency of the N.Z. Mines Trust, .the position rendered vacant by the death of Mr R. Rose. SAILORS' CREEK DREDGE. The starting of the Sailors' Creek dredge at Shepherd's Flat, Daylesford, Victoria, is described at great length in the Daylesford "Herald" of Friday, 31st last, month. The dredge is referred to as being 86ft long, with 28ft 6iu beam, and a depth of 6ft. Steam is supplied to work the machinery a* 1251bs to the square inch by a marine' type return tube boiler of 50 horsepower, nominal. A main steam pipe leads to a compound horizontal condensing engine of 35 nominal horse power. As it is intended to work the dredge night and day, an. electric lighting plant has been added to tho machinery. At the opening ceremony fully 200 were present, amongst them being Mr Johu Kneebone, of Auckland. One of the speakers referred to the fact that New Zealand represented three-fourths of the whole capital of the venture. The Mayor of Daylesford also stated that the bulk of the money came from New Zealand, and he considered they had a great thing before them, having a large scope of country to work. The fact was also stated that with one of the puipp dredges SSlozs had been won from two acres of ground, yet there was nothing for shareholders. With a bucket dredge, however, if £1000 worth of gold was got to the acre, there would be £800 profit for shareholders. Mr Munro said when he built the dam he had the creek tested, and was quite satisfied that the gold was distributed equally. He had no doubt what the result would be. i WHANGAMATA GOLD CORPORATION. It has been decided by the general manager of the Whangamata Gold Corporation (Limited) to temporarily suspend milling operation.- pending completion of certain important development works. It is anticipated "that crushing will be resumed, in 1 three or four months' time, as it is expected that large bodies of payable ore will be blocked out ready for stoping by that time. The crosscut at No. 3 level will be continued eastwards. It is proposed later on to sink the shaft 100 to 150 feet below the No. 3 level to exploit the promising shoot of ore met with in the upper workings. Up to the end of July £15,983 worth of bullion was won from the 9666 tons of ore treated by this company.
