NAUTICAL ENQUIRY.

ACCIDENT TO THE MAWHERA,

CAPTAIN SHAW BLAMEABLE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, this day,

A magisterial enquiry into the striking of the Union Company's steamer Mawhera on a rock off East Cape Island on the 20th October is being held to-day. From th* evidence the vessel appeared to have struck on a rock, the existence of which is marked on the chart as doubtful. Captain Shaw, vvho wa.s in charge of the vessel at the time, stated' he had often taken th* same passage sometimes from necessity and sometimes to save time, and had never met any mishap. He could not understand the occurrence.

The. Court found Captain Shaw blameable jn taking the Mawhera througli the passage without adopting, any special precaution for her isafety! The Court), however, took into consideration the. fact that the passage was much used by coasting vessels, and that* Captain Shaw had taken his vessel through there safely on previous occasions, and ordered his certificate to be returned to him upon .payment of tire costs of the inquiry, 'seven guineas.
