ELECTRIC TRAMWAYS.

THE POLL A FIASCO

The poll of ratepayers with regard to the granting of a concession to construct electric tramways in Auckland was fixed for to-day, but very little interest was taken in the matter. Polling booths were located as follows:—North Ward. Central Mission Hall; Ponsonby Ward, Oddfellows' Hall. King-street; South Ward, St. James' Hall: Karane;ahape Ward, St. Benedicts' Hall; Grafton Ward, St. Sepulchre's schoolroom; East Ward, Charitable Aid Board office. Outside the booths large posters w-ere affixed which read as follows: —"Prog-ress, Auckland, progress. If you are in favour of electric tramways and penny f%res do not vote at all. Only opponents to the scheme are required to vote." The poll clerics had an easy time, for up to noon not a single vote had been recorded at any of the booths. As 3000 votes are required to kill the concession there would seem to be little doubt that it will not be longbefore electric tramways are running in Auckland.

By three o'clock only one vote had been recorded against the. electric tramways, one lady in Ponsonby having voted. At two of the booths booths people said they wished to vole vote for the tram, aud upon being told that they need not vote at all under those circumstances walked outside again. , • "'"-'■-■.
