LAWN TENNIS.
The grounds of the Devonport Lawn Tennis Club were opened yesterday under favourable circumstances. A very large attendance of members, friends and visitors were present during the afternoon,' who enjoyed the hospitality of the Club. The Courts were in splendid order and everything went to prove the anxiety of the committee to make the opening day what it really was—a great success. Mr P. H. Mason, vice-president, presented the retiring secretary, Mr A. Bartley, on behalf of the Club "with a souvenir of the Club's appreciation of his ability in the interests of the Club during the past four years. Mr Whit-taker, on behalf of the Club, announced that Mr W. Skeates, vice-president, had presented a gold medal to the members for competition during the ensuing season. The announcement was received with hearty applause, after which play was resumed with enthusiasm until a late hour.
The opening of the West End Lawn Tennis Club, which was postponed last Saturday on account of the weather, will take place to-morrow afternoon. There will no doubt be a large attendance of members and their flianas at the club's "At Horns.' - __.
