TEN YEARS' PROGRESS.

WELLINGTON, November 22

A report by the 'Registrar-General of ten years' progress of the colony shows the following increases:— Poptilation, 20.53 per cent; output of coal , 41; exports, 46.45; manufactures, 42.29; butter trade, 633.06; frozen meat, 243.58; cheese, 175.56; deposits in banks of issue, 29.54; in savings banks, 129.26. The private wealth of the people increased by £ 52,435,855, now amounting to £252 per head of population. Capital value of land and improvements increased by £27,453,b33.

INCOME TAX.

The amount paid and growth in the three last years is shown thus: — 1597 and 1898, inclusive, £115,210; 1894 and 1895 inclusive, £89,891; increase per cent, last three years, 28.17. The sums paid by way of income tax have been:-—IS 92 and 1893, £67,367; 1893 and 1894, £75,238; 1894-95, £89,----891; 1895-96, £92,778; 1898-97, £105,----504; 1897-98, £115,210. On a uniform rate of tax the increase for the lastthree years only is shown in the table, the full number of ratepayers being then ascertaind. Increase in the income tax indicates increased taxable wealth, as in the case of increased wealth per head of population.
