TREATMENT OF FLAX.

WELLINGTON, November 22

Mr Gilman's new machinery for the separation of the gum from green flax has been completed by Messrs Robertson and Co, from designs supplied by the inventor. It consists of a large' iron vat with suitable steam coils in the bottom for boiling the flax leaf in arsenicated water, and a machine fitted with three heavy rolls with gearing and lever attachments for imparting the necessary pressure. There is also a water scutch with rollers and a mangle. Mr Duncan, Chief Inspector of Machinery, assisted in the construction of the machinery, and valuable hints were supplied by Mr Twogood, of Featherston, who has taken a leading part in experiments in the mechanical treatment of flax. Mr Gilman's experiments have extended over a period of twenty years.
