ANNIVERSARY DAY.

TO-MORROW'S HOLIDAY,

To-morrow being the anniversary of the j: founding of the colony and the city of Auckland will as heretofore be observed as a close holiday, and all places of business ■will be closed. Numerous holiday attractions are announced, the principal attraction naturally being the Auckland annual regatta. The Takapuna Jockey Club races and the various excursions will also no doubt attract some thousands of holiday- | THE- ANNUAL REGATTA. j The anniversary regatta which takes place to-morrow is expected to be a very I successful and interesting event. An ex- . cellent programme of about 20 sailing and rowing races has.been arranged^ and m most of them very keen competition is anticipated: Besides the races there will be numerous side shows in the afternoon which should-alioi'd sreat amusement to visitors. The fine barque Silverstream will' be the I flagship,- and as she is a large and roomy vessel there will be plenty of accommoda- | t_ori;for visitors. Seats for the ladies and awnings over the decks all add to the comfort'of the spectators, while the bulwarks of the barque are just the right height to allow a good view over them of what is foing on. Arrangements have been made for" catering on board, and visitors will be supplied with refreshments at moderate fates. Steamers will run from the Queenstreet1 Wharf to tlie flasship throughout the day. With regard to the naval cutter race, we learn that the Ponsonby Naval Artillery have also entered for thi.s event, ■' so that there will be three boats competing. This race is expected to be one of the best of the day. The junior' gig race has been reinstated on the programme, crews from the West End and Auckland Clubs having entered. The other gig races will be good contests. The chief interest of yachtsmen centres, in the 30-foot yacht .race, in which another line struggle between Meteor and Kotiri is looked for. The Artillery Band will be on board the flagship, and will piay musical selections throughout the day. The Committee have made'complete arrangements for tbe success of the affair. Nothing has been left ■undone to secure the comfort and pleasure of visitors to the flagship. In the scow race, several additional entries are expected to-night. The scows start at nine o'clock to-morrow, after which the other sailing events will be started and the rowing races will be pulled off in tlie afternoon. A°final meeting of the Committee will be held this evening at eight o'clock at the Waitemata Hotel. OTHER HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS. To-morrow the Ferry Company will run excursion steamers to Pine Island, Rangitoto, St. Helier's Bay, Lake Takapuna,and Motutapu Island, the latter steamer, after landing passengers, proceeding to the fishing grounds. The times of leaving for the various places are set forth in our advertisement, columns, as are also the various trips for Sunday. The public are reminded of fche Orangemen's picnic and sports to be held to-mor-row at St. Helier's Bay. Vehicles leave the Protestant Hall, Newton, at 8 a.m. The Northern Steamship Company as usual announce a number of attractive excursions for to-morrow's holiday. The Clansman will run to Mahurangi Heads, and the Wellington to Waiwera Hot ■Springs. . The Rotomahana will make a trip to Waiheke, while the line paddle steamer Wakatere will make two trips round the harbour and islands, affording an excellent opportunity of watching the yacht races. , FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' GALE. ' The Auckland Friendly Societies' Gala to be held in the Domain to-morrow will no doubt prove a great attraction. The object of this gathering is set out in, an article which appears on page 3 of this issue.
