The statutory conference of shop assistants was held at noon to-day at the Municipal Buildings. The Mayor (Mr P. Dignan) presided, and among those also present were Crs. Kidd and Janrieson, the Town Clerk (Mr P. A. Philips), the Mayor of Newton (Mr J. W. Shackelford), and Cr. J. McCabe (Parnell). No petitions or requisitions were received in reference to any alteration in the present weekly halfholiday, and it was therefore unanimously resolved, on the motion of Cr. Kidd, " That Wednesday afternoon be the weekly halfholiday during the coming year."

The many friends of Mr and Mrs Kerr, the popular host and hostess of the Criterion Hotel, Cambridge, will be glad to learn that they have decided to continue in charge of that "establishment. Mr Harry Kerr's health lias improved so rapidly that he has now no thought of going out of business. He was in town this week looking in the best of form.

Owing to carelessness of users, pea rifles seen*destined to be the causeof serious accidents, if not fatalities. Mr W. F. Buckland, solicitor, of Cambridge, discovered on Tuesday morning that someone had fired a pellet at the back door of his office. It passed through the panel of the dcor, and embedded itself in a door on the opposite side of the room.

There was a very good attendance, a large number of visitors K'oing across from Auckland during the afternoon. The fair was opened at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Mr Hawthorne, vicar of the parish, and when the sale came to an end at 10 o'clock the promoters had nearly £60 in hand as the result of their labours. The following ladies were in charge of the various stalls : -Fancy stall, Mesdames Cook, Brett, Frater, Moron and Miss Cook ; stall No. I, Mesdames Quick, Ashton, Miss Burninghani; flower stall, Misses Browne and Pierce ; bonbon stall. Misses Reeve, Frater and Alison ; refreshment kiosk, Misses Gordon, Pickering, Devore, Boyd, Pierce ; Christmas tree, Mrs Boyd.

An inquest was held yesterday afternoon by Mr E. Baker, coroner, at the residence of Mrs Bevan, Cross-street, Newton, ,on the body of an infant, name unknown, which was found abandoned on a verandah in the Great North Road, and was taken care of by the Charitable Aid Board, being boarded out at Mrs Bevan's. The medical evidence showed that the child died from consumption of the bowels, and a verdict was returned accordingly. The police have been unable to trace the mother of the child.

A sitting of the Licensing Committee for the City of Auckland licensing district was held this morning. Present: Mr Brabant. S.M. (Chairman), and Messrs Patterson and Julian. Mr Mc\ eagh applied for a temporary transfer of the license of the Pier Hotel from George Loram to Thomas Buxton. The application was granted. An application was made that a conditional license be granted to John Endean authorising him to sell liquor on the flagship on Regatta Day. The application was not granted, the harbour not being within the boundary of any licensing district.

To-morrow at 2 p.m. the usual land auction will be held by Messrs Saml. Yaile and Sons. There will be offered a house of 5 rooms, Vincent-street; house, Ponsonby, for removal; properties at Nortlicore, including Gladstone Hall, 2 cottages, 3| acre section, 7 building sites, harbour frontages.

The Ferry Company notify in this issue their excursion trips for Saturday next (Regatta Day), which comprise trips to Pine Island, St. Helier's Bay, Lake Takapuna, Rangitoto and Motutapu, and a trip to the fishing grounds. The various times of departure are set forth in an advertisement column.

Mr T. Harle Giles, Principal of the Commercial College, Lower" Symond-street, notifies that he will be pleased to see parents, guardians, or intending pupils at the College or St. Andrew's Lodge, Have-lock-street, on and alter this date. Day school duties resume Tuesday, February Ist, 189S, at 9.30 a.m. Evening class pupils may now enrol.
