A PECULIAR ACCIDENT.
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent)
PAEROA, this day.
A peculiar accident happened in Paeroa last evening. A. well was being sunk at Ashwiu's house, on the Te Aroha Road, and was down 35ft when the workman knocked off. In the evening about 7 o'clock Mr Ashwin heardapeculiar bubbling noise, and he and Mr G. Arrner went over to the well and struck a match with the object of looking down the well. Immediately the match was struck an explosion took place, knocking both men down and burning their faces and necks very considerably. Neither, however, is seriously injured. Evidently the bottom of the well was very near water, which forced gases through the crust of the earth and filled the well, causing an explosion when the match was ignited. The well has since filled with water.
