The International Seisniological Committee has established two chains of stations round the world. Timaru is the place named in its list for New Zealand, where an observer already exists in the person of Mr George Hogben, the Secretary of the Seismological Committee of the Australasian Association of Science, and (says the Chrjstchurch "Press") it would seem an appropriate way of carrying out the proposal of the International Committee if one of the instruments imported by the Government were placed under his' charge. The work of the horizontal pendulum is not con fined to recording fine earthquake waves. The gradual movement of the line upwards or downwards will indicate either an oscillation of the surface due to tidal movements of the crust caused by the moon's attraction, or it will indicate the process of subsidence or upheaval generally detected .only in the course of long periods by geological evidence of other kinds. In short, no movement of the crust, temporary or permanent, is likely to pass unnoticed where one of these instruments is in use.
