CHAMBER OF MINES.
A meeting of the Chamber of Mines Goldfields Committee was held this afternoon, Mr Graves Aickin presiding. There were also present Messrs Gordon, Mercer, and Gorrie.
Mr Kissling stated that at the last meetin" of the Council it was igreed that the Mining Act should not be pressed forward arid that legislation should be postponed until . next session in order that in the meantime a suitable measure of a permanent character should be prepared. Mr Kissling said that Mr Cadman was now in town, and it was suggested that he should be interviewed on the whole matter of mining legislation.
By permission of the Council, Mr Hunt gave an address. He suggested that a meeting of members of the House of Representatives at the Chamber should take place to protest against the mining legislation of the Government. He thought it should lie pointed out that they did not want to drive capital out of the .country. Mr Hunt said he was in favour of the country being " stumped," and that the miners at Waihi, Waitekauri, Thames, and other mining centres should be visited, ' and the effect of the proposed Government mining legislation explained and pointed out to them.
