WINS FOR PARNELL, AUCKLAND XV. AND UNITED.
The third series of cricket championship matches was concluded on Saturday afternoon, resulting in wins for Parnell, Auckland XV. and United. The day was a perfect one for cricket, but the hot, dry weather which has prevailed for the past fortnight had made the wickets very hard and somewhat in favour of the batsmen. _ Parnell caused a great surprise by their defeat of Gordon. The first afternoon of j the match left Parnell with a score of 103 for their first innings, while Gordon had made 126 for the loss of four wickets, and the game was looked on as an easy win for the latter. On Saturday, however, the Gordon team, batting one man short, lost the remaining 5 wickets for 33 runs. Parnell were 59 runs behind, but they rapidly put up a score of 118, for the loss of only 4 wickets, thanks chiefly to the splendid batting of Mills and Lawson. At this stage Parnell declared their innings closed, and Gordon, with three men absent went to the wickets with 63 to get within an hour. This they were unable to do, the seventh wicket falling three minutes before j the call of time with the score at 58. Parnell thus snatched a well-deserved victory by four runs. The Auckland XV. won their match with Auckland XI. very easily by 13 wickets. On the first day's play the Eleven made 63, and the Fifteen had lost 10 wickets for !)9. The remaining four wickets added on 25, bringing the total up to 124. In their second innings the Eleven, batting two men short, gave a poor exhibition of cricket, and were dismissed for 81, D. Clayton 28, and T. Neill 24, boing the chief scorers. The Fifteen, requiring 20 to win, succeeded in doing so for the loss of one wicket. The game was continued after being won, and the Fifteen scored 170 for 10 wickets, A. Hill, 46, being the principal run-getter. United continued their first innings against North Shore, and succeeded in making 192 before they were all disposed of. Stemson 77, Marshall 30, were the chief contributors. The game ended in a win for United on the first innings. The following are the scores : SENIORS. PARNELL V. GORDON. Paenell—First innings 103 Gordon—First Innings.
