POLICE COURT.
THIS DAY.
(Before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M.)
Assaulting Their Captain.—The three young sailors Ernest Borastero, "Win. Lund and Wm. Parker, who were arrested yesterday afternoon on a charge of assaulting the captain of the barque Broughton, appeared in answer to the charge to-day, and all three pleaded guilty. The captain gave his version of the assault, which according to him was quite unprovoked. The three lads came on to the poop and set upon their skipper with their lists ; but Captain John Chalk is big and burly, and easily kept them at bay until the police arrived. His Worship sentenced each to a month's hard labour, pointing out that the sentence was a lenient one on account of the vessel not being on the high seas at the time.
A Ship's Larder.—Two young fellows named Fredk. Wilkinson and Wm. Hodgkiss were charged with stealing a quantity of stores from the lazarette of the s.s. Waikato, now in port, and on the application of the police were remanded till Monday.
