A GIRL DROWNED.
SAD AFFAIR AT TAURANGA,

TAURANGA,' this day,
A half-caste named Susan CallaAvay, aged eighteen, Avas drowned in the Wairoa River yesterday morning. She went to bathe Avith three younger sisters. All but deceased could SAvim. . Deceased Avas Avalking alongside the bank. When , .yarned by' a sister Avho was SAvimming that the Avater Avas deep she disregarded the Avarning and suddenly sank. She came up and exclaimed, " God's fond of me." One sister told the other nearest to decease to catch her hair, but deceased put one hand on the shoulder of the girl attempting to save her, Avhieh caused the swimmer to sink, and tlie s .vimmer only succeeded in getting ashore much exhausted. Deceased sank again, and the body Avas recovered by a police party during the afternoon. An inquest is to beheld at noon.
