MISCELLANEOUS.

The police stables at Mount Cook, Wellington, were destroyed by fire Oct. 2. Two horses belonging to Colonel Pole-Penton were rescued, but three others, the property of the police department, were burned to death. One was the thoroughbred Lassmore, son of the great English sire Cadogan. Mr Colvin of Dunedin, recently exhibited to members of Parliament models of trucks which will convey sheep direct from the freezing works to the ship's side, and can be lifted by derricks and lowered into the hold, the bottom opening by means of a hinge and discharging the sheep. It is claimed that this patent dispenses with several processes which damage carcases and is a great saving of time. It can be also used for coal. Mr Colvin wants the Government to adopt the invention.
