TYPOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY.

The half-yearly meeting of the Auckland" Typographical "Association took place on Saturday evening last in the Foresters' Hall. There was a large attendance, and the President (Hon. W. "T. Jennings) occupied the chair. The report and balance-sheet lor the past six months were submitted and adopted. The report dealt with the question of unemployed compositors, linotype machines, apprentices, the recent Typographical Conference at Wellington, the death of Mr Harry Thomson, Eight Hours' League, Government advertising in non-U"nion journals, etc. The number of members was now 126. The receipts for the half-year were £54 Is; expenditure, £62 3s * 7d. The amount to credit was £206 5s 4d. Mr Cleveland (Secretary) read the report of a deputation's interviews with the proprietors of the daily papers in regard to linotype machines, and the report was adopted. A report of the Conference proceedings at Wellington Avas also read, and, on the motion of Messrs Macdermott and Regan, referred to the Board for consideration and report. Considerable discussion took place in regard to the duty upon linotype machines, and it was eventually resofved that the meeting endorse the resolution of the Conference. On the motion of Mr A. Hall and the secretary, it was resolved that the amount of retiring allowance due to a financial member at his death be paid to his widow or next of kin. It was resolved that the fee for honorary m embers be reduced to 5s per annum. A motion by Mr J. Carnahan, seconded by Mr Hall, that the Association withdraw from the Trade and Labour. Council, was lost. The President suggested the formation of a special settlement for unemployed compositors, and lie was requested to make all necessary inquiries. Votes of thanks to the Board and the Conference delegates were passed, on the motion of Mr W."S. Bryee, and a special meeting was then held to decide whether the Association should register under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. Mr Chappell moved that the Association register under the Act, and it was agreed to.
