PAEROA NEWS.

(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent)

Paeroa, this day. A QUARTER-MILE foot race for £10 a-side between E. Cock (scratch) and Robinson (18yds), took place on the football ground at Paeroa on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Robinson by quite as much as his start.

What might have proved a disastrous fire was fortunately nipped in the bud at Crosby's Hotel on Friday evening about 10 p.m. By some means a nre broke out in the kerosene room at the back of the hotel, but had not got a fair hold when noticed by one of the girls, and her screams quickly brought Captain O'Hara and Fireman H. Moore, of the local fire brigade, to the spot, and they managed to extinguish the names before much damage was done.
