PRINCE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY.

To-day being tho anniversary of the Prince of Wales' birthday, the occasion was observed as a general holiday, all business places in the town, wibh few exceptions, being closed. Various attractions wero offered to holiday-makers —the races Bb Ellerslie, cheap railway excursions, water excursions, and picnics. The flagstaff in fche Albert Park was decorated with bunting, as also were the vessels in porb, and the New Zealand Governmenb flag was displayed from bhe Municipal building. A considerable number of excursionists lefb for counbry stations by train to spend the day, and brakes and waggonettes wero in groat requisition forexcuraionsand picnics, a number of parties proceeding up to Nihotapu and Waibakerei, In bhe afternoon bhe bown was quito deserted. As might be expected, the fine day induced a large number of the pleasure-Becking public to patronise the many water excursions arranged for the day, and mosb of tho .beamers wero crowded when bhey lefb tho wharves. A great) many privabe picnics and boabing parties also lefb to spend the day ab tha pretty bays round the harbour, and moab of the yachbs which have been launched are away cruising.
