SIR GEORGE GREY'S STATUE.
(By Clarion.)
(Copied from the " Waikato Advocate.", To those who desire to see something done in tho direction of perpetuating the name and fame of Maoriland's grand old man, Sir George Grey, I dedicate these few linos :—
Raise up a monument to him who is your truest friend, And let the lasting marble tell bis story to bhe end ; So generations, yeb to be, may o'er his greatness pore, Whose glorious name and splendid fame, resound from shore to shore.
Let all the sons of Maoriland—the dusky and the white, In one great bond of sympathy on work of love unite; Thus shall the coming ages see, and millions yet unborn, How we his name and splendid fame, could honour and adorn.
Ib may not be, it cannot be, he will much longer stay, Into tho greab unknown he'll pass, as all musbpaßs away ; Life's little limit soon he'll reach, he's standing on the shore, He'll soon, into the limitless, set sail for evermore.
He loves thee, oh, fair Maoriland! thy children are hie own, For them his forethought, love and care are ever freely shown ; And all thy children's children, too, shall yeb his praises sing, His glorious name and splendid fame through Saxon lands shall ring.
Then, Maoriland, c'en as thou art the land be loves the best, And though tar distant from thy shores he may be laid to rest, His heart to thee turns lovingly, though sundered by the sea. Thou wert and art his chiefesb care, and while he lives will be.
From north to south, from east to west, from all our island land, Let loving heart and grateful mind be backed by willitg hand To raise the lasting marble up, that will outlive our clay, So when we've gone, forgotten, past, the future shall not say •—
They loved him not* nor hd«6dred him they let his mem'rv pass ' To wither in the blast of'time, like tummershrivelled grass." No ! Rather shall the ages say, "Behold their tribute here, They prized his. name and splendid fame »nd held blsmem'ry dear,"
