A man of about thirty years of age, named Henry Christopher Smith, was charged ab the Police Court this morning with having on or aboub bbc 15bh May, ab Auckland, unlawfully assaultod Elizabebh Corney. Sergeant Gamble asked for a remand till this day week. The prosecutrix, ho said, waa now in the Hospibal, and the police did nob know as yeb whab injuries had been inflicted. The accused asked for bail.
Sergeant Gamble said he would objecb bo j bail being granbed, until ib was seen what injuries and wounds bhe prosecubrix had recoived. Sho was now in a very serious condition—was especially so last nighb. She had beeu so badly beaten that when she was admitted inbo bhe Hospital on bhe certificate of Dr. Hooper she could nob sco oub of her eyes and was unablo to speak. Her body was black and blue all ovor from the kicking she had got, nnd there was a possibility that she would not recover from hor injurios. The Bench decided to refuse bail.
