REDUCTIONS IN THE HEWING

RATE

A GENERAL STRIKE THREATENED.

Sydney, December 19. The South Clifton Colliery, in the Southern district, has notified a reduction of .the hewing rate to an average of Is 9d. A meeting of the Miners' Delegates Board ab Newcastle discussed the nofcieas of reductions issued lately, and resolved nob to submit to them. They also recommended the miners in the several districts to demand an advance of 4d per ton, to take effect on January 14. If this resolufcion is endorsed by the districts, a general strike must follow. One of the largest colliery proprietors Bfcateß thab the action of the men will be the means of bringing the masters together again. Some understanding or agreement must be arrived at to protect them from the encroachments of tho mon, and they must iix such a price for coal as will return a fair profit, whale winning back from fehe Southern and New Zealand collieries the trade taken away while the high prict\s ruled here.
