THE NEW UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS.
A conversazione, gob up by the University Students' Association to welcome tbe new professors lately arrived from Home, came to a very successful issue on Saturday evening ab tbe University buildings. There was a large attendance, amongst those present being His Worship bhe Mayor (Mr J. J. Holland) and bhe Misses Holland, Sir G. M. O'Rorke, Archdeacon Dudley, Rev. Canon Nelson, Revs. Davis and Fitzgerald, and several members of the University Council. The decorations of tho rooms and passages carried oub by the students were highly praised by thoße presenb, bhey being brighb and effective. Mr Baume, on behalf of the Association, welcomed the professors in a short speech. After referring to the successes of the gentlemen ab Home, he went on to Bay that he hoped they would not only interest themselves in their own work in the Uoiversity but would take an active part in all pertaining to the advancement of the institution and to the good of the students. Professor Tubba, in replying on bebalf of" the professors, thanked tbe student* lot the hearty welcome acoorded them, and assured them tbab be and his fellow professors had the best intereets of the college ab heart. A mnsical programme was then gone through, with considerable success, a piano solo contributed by Miss Kean being appreciated, as was also the song " Across the Stream," tastefully given by Miss W. Dudley. An instrumental trio Jby Misses Reeve (2) and Mr J. A. Beale was well rendered. Songs were aIBO given by Mesdames S. Nathan and Lawry, and Messrs Wither and De Montalk. A pianoforte solo by Mies Maclaurin, and the chorus " Gaudeamus," by the students, closed the programme. Sir Maurice O'Rorke then thanked the students for the hearty welcome given the professors by them. He also stated that he hoped the professors would stop with them for many years, for although the appointments were but for a limited period, he could assure tbem that there was no limit aB long as they were willing to continue among them. At an inberval during bhe evening, refreshmenbs were handed, round. What had been a most enjoyable gathering, broke up shortly before J,l o'clock. ____
