INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION AND SALE OF WORK.
The industrial exhibition and sale of work in connection with tho Beresford-street Congregational Sunday-school was continued in the Foresters' Hall, Newton, la_t evening and proved an unqualified success. The interior of the hall looked quaint and picturesque, and the host of moving brighbiy-attired figures interspersed with bewitching sirens luring their unfortunate male brethren ir)-to all sorts of reckless extravagance, imparted a great deal of animation and gaiety to the scene. Tho attendance waa very large, and tho many attractions well fulfilled their object in providing music and entertainment. The various articles exposed for sale were greatly admired, and the skill and excellence of the handiwork of the scholars eiioited many encomiums. The scholars are to be congratulated on the resulb of their labours, and the practical appreciation of bhose present was evidenced by the ease and rapidity with which the goods were disposed of. The loan exhibits proved a greab source of interest and the greab variety of raro and unique pieces of foreign workmanship warranted all the attention that was bestowed upon bhem. Weighing and eiecbrical machines, an art gallery and other side shows were much in demand and must have proved a valuable adjunct in augumenting the coders. A bun eabing competition was exceedingly amusing. Some forty young people, trusting to the superiority of their individual masticating powers, entered for the contest, and were marshalled before a similar number of plump looking buns with their hands and arms tied. An exciting scuffle and munching ended in the total disappearance of Miss Smith's bun before that of any other competitor. The refreshment stall was largely pacromsed during bho evening. Tho stalls were abiy presided over by the following ladies : — Mesdames Tudehope, Campbell, English, Thomas, Cousins. Brown, Mi.se3 Welis, Armsbrong and E. Hales. The afiair is being promoted in order to swell the school building funds. The exhibition was opened afjain this afternoon. In the evening an attractive musical programme will be rendered and a phonograph will, no doubb, afford much entertainment.
