Wha^ he said wa3 that the Councillors should bo nominated for life, bub should be periodically broughb face to face with the peopie and their actions be thus reviewed. He is opposed to an elective Council. Ho ad-! dressed an enthusiastic meeting of about' 1,500 people at Lybdeton on Monday nighb. I the meeting not concluding till nearly mid- j night. His speech was in the main similatsi to those previously given, but he fore-' shadowed the appointment of a Minister for trade and commerce. A vobe of thanks to Mr Seddcn and confidence in the Govern*, menb was carried unanimously.

It is said that the third candidate to be selected by the liquor party will be Vogel. Ab Stratford Mr McGuire declared againsb bhe Government. Persistent reports that Sir Robert Stout's following is weakening has hardened up his supporters to greater efforts, and tbey are now very alert. Mr McLean last night made an effective speech in favour of bhe toxabion of unimproved values in city property. Mr Bell advocates a university at Wellington, and denounces what he calls bhe combination of " Beer and Bible." There are indications thab the Labour party will not vote solid, and ib is alleged that the ballots were very loosely taken and are not representative.
