At. the annual meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council Mr Jones was elected representative on tho Hospital Board. Benjamin Christie, an elderly man belonging to Dunedin, dropped dead while going to Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon. The private residence of Mr Allender, soap manufacturer at Petone, Wellington, was totally destroyed by fire last evening. A social evening will be held in the Albert-street Barracks to-nigbb, when the result of the eelf-deQial week will be declared. Dunlop has been re-elected Chairman of the Thames County, and Messrs Radford and Koefoed were nominated for tbe Thames Mayoralty. The Waitemata County Council yesterday afternoon decided to call for tenders for 800 yards of blue metal for road repair* ing purposes ab Birkenhead, Northcobe and Takapuna. The Auckland delegates to the New Zealand Baptist Union, which has jusb concluded its sittings at Nelson, returned here yesterday by way of Onehunga, per 8.8. Mahinapua. In consequence of the elections the Chief Justice has postponed the opening of the criminal sessions of the Supreme Courb in Auckland and elsewhere from Monday next to Thursday. Mr James Adams has composed a hymn, "Forward Zoalandia," which is sung to the tune of " Onward Christian Soldiers." It made its debut ab Sir George Gr^'s meeting yesterday. The New Zealand Chess Congress will be commenced ab the Otago Club-room on December 26th. Trophies of value of £15,* £10 and £5 will be given, and a number of others are promised. The Chief Justice ab Wellington dismissed the Union Company's appeal in the case where £11, the value of a dog lost in traneit between Wellington and Bluff waa awarded by the magistrate. Mr Hales, engineer-in-chief, was expected back ab Wellington from the West Coast yesterday. He has been engaged in inspecting with a view to passing two sections of the Midland Railway along the northern shore of Lake Brunner. A petition has been lodged againsb tha validity of the election of councillors for tho Waikato County Council, owing principally to the alleged illegal appointment of the Returning Officer, and alleged irregularities in conducting the local elections. Mr Eden George, the present Mayor, and Mr T. Gapes, have been nominated for tbo Mayoralty of Christchurch. The retiring Mayors of Sydenham, Woolston and Sumner, Messrs W. Jacques, J. Richardson and J. Tait, have beon re-elected unopposed. Mr J. Brunt has been elected Mayor of Linwood, near Christchurch. In the will case, Frances Scotb v. Thomas Buddie (as the executor of the late Dr. Wm. Stock well), in the Supreme. Courb yesterday afternoon, Mr Justice Conolly ordered thab the sum of £100 per annum to an annuitant should be paid oub of the capital and not out of the income from the estate, which was insufficient of itself to pay the annuity. Costs £15 15a were allowed.
