A sitting of the Supreme Court (in Chambers) was held this morning. Probate was granted to the executors under the will of Thomas Dodd, Wm. Thompson, and Joseph Oakley. In the matter of " The Public Works Act, 1882," and of the claim for compensation by John Thomson against the Upper Muburangi . District Road Board. This was a summons for leave to proceed with and prosecute the said claim. Leave was granted by consent on terms signed by the parties being lodged herewith. The Sanitas Company (Limited) v. Wm. Ogle. This was a summons for a commission to examine witnesses on behalf of the plaintiffs. The application was allowed to stand over until Tuesday next.

The following is the result of the polling on Wednesday for a member of the Waite; mata County Council for the Wainu 1 Riding :—Alex. J.. Hatfield, junr., 77 ; Franciß Poynbon, 58 j Jas. Inglis, 40. Mr Thomas Leigh, Returning Officer, declared Mr Hatfield duly electod. The county election* are now completed. Mr Hatofield is the only new member.

An ' old New Zealand identity, John Douglas, formerly a sailor, died at his residence at Waitetuna, Raglan, West Coaßt, a few days ago. Douglas was one of the last survivors of the battle of Navarino, October 20th, 1827, in which be foughb as a British man-o'-wars-man. He came to New Zealand when still a young man, and settled down amongst the Maoris, taking a native wife. He had lived in the Raglan district for about 50 years, and had never seen a railway train until he came to Ngaruawahia last year to give evidence before the Native Lands Court.

About fifteen years ago Sergeant Elliott, of the A.C. foroe was buried in theSymondBtreet Cemetery, and subsequently a tombstone was erected over his grave. Latterly it was noticed that the stone had got out of the base, so a few of the non-commissioned officers subscribed sufficient funds to have the stone renovated and the grave generally attended to, which good work was completed last week.

Tho Foresters' Hall, Newton, was the scene last Dighb of a brilliant assemblage, the occasion being a. re-union of the members of the Hebrew community of Auckland, who were entertained by tho Jewish bachelors. Messrs A. M. and B. E. Myers superintended the working of a magic lantern, and descriptive remarks were made by Mr F. B. Baume. This was followed by a Christy Minstrel entertainment,1 in which Messrs H. Goldwater, B. Keesing, L. Neumegen and L. Lewis, especially distinguished themselves as corner men. Tho following programme was gone through :— Intermezzo, "A Dream of the Future," orchestra; opening chorus, "Aladdin," company; song, " Enniscorthy," Mr B. M. Myers ; song, *' Up to Date," Mr L. Neumegen ; song, " When Noah Hung Out of the Ark," Mr H, N. Goldwater; song, VJusb Come From the Inquest," A. Neumegen ; song, •' Sister Mary Walks Like This," L. Lewis; song, "Oh, Love, Will You Be Mine," B. Keesing ; song, " Where Did You Get That Hat," E. R. Davis ; dance, "Garotte," Miss Tobias; recitation, "Actors I Have Met," J. Levy. At the conclusion of this portion of the programme refreshments were served, and then dancing was indulged in bill about 1 a.m. A word of praise is specially due to the energebic Committee, and to Mr W. H. Neumegen for the very excellent music which he provided.

Miss Coutts, the young woman who, was so tearfully injured ab Onehunga through an accident when on horseback, lately,' is, wo hear, slightly better this morning, and her condition easier. The doctors, however, reserve their opinions for the present.

The Auckland Lawn Tennis Club threw their courts open yesterday. A large number of players were present, and a mosb enjoyable day was spent. The mem bers ot the West End Club also indulged in practice. The formal opening takes place to-morrow, Mr A. G. Cooke, the hon. soc, having gob everything in apple-pie order.

There was a good attendance of members and visitors ab the regular weekly meeting of tho Star of Newton Lodge, 1.0. G.T., last night. Sister Garland opened the Lodge. A pleasant hour was spent listening to the items contributed by members of H.M.s. Curacoa Good Templar Lodge. The members of the Star of Newton are requested bo pay an official visit to their tn6n-of-war brethren to-morrow nighb.

The firsb fishing excursion of bhe Auck" land Club leaves by tho Tainui on Saturday afternoon.

The men-o'-warsmen of the Gem of the Sea Lodge, 1.0. G.T., of H.M.s. Curacoa, give an entertainment to-morrow night in the Alexandra-street schoolroom. Tho admission is free, and no collection.

A special performance of Gounod's " Mease Solennelle" will be given at Sb. Benedict's Church on Sunday morning, and an original composition by the Rev. Dr. Egan will be again sune by Mr John Fuller. Vocalists and instrumental iota are by advertisement asked to take part in tho performance.
