A DISAPPOINTED BURGLAR.

To lay out a careful plan of operations and succeed so far as gaining an entry into the premises to be burglarised, then discover tho spoil to be missing, mudb be disappointing to an enterprising burglar. Such, however, wa3 the experience of tome person last nighb who broke into the office of the Devonporb Ferry Company in Quayi street. Evidently under the impression that the receipts of the holiday would have to be kept in the office until the banks opened on the following day, the burglar must have hid inside the office until after the departure of the last steamer at midnight,* when the captaiu phut the doors aud turned out the gas. Prior to this, ab 7.30 o'clock in the evening, the office proper had been locked up by the manager, Mr J. R. D. Baker. On arrival ab 7.15 o'clock this -morning the latter found several packets of papers scattered over the floor, and surmising thab someone had effected an entry, he went outside and inspected the tickeb windows. In one of the upper panes he found a neat hole in the glaes, where a hand had been inserted, and the latch turned back. The thief had then lifted the window and climbed in. Owing to a special arrangement, however, by which all moneys taken on holidays are lodged in the bank the same evening, there was no large sum to be annexed, and some 4s worih of coppers, carelessly covered with a slip of paper, evidently escaped the observation of the prowler, as they were found allright this morning. Nothing, so far as can be ascertained, was abstracted from the office. *
