THE ALDIS CASE-A MISAPPREHENSION.
Sib,—The deputation which interviewed the Council of University College a few days ago plendod the question on a wrong issue. They argued ou the analogy of a trial. Mr Aldis was spoken of as if he were a prisoner, to be found guilty or not guilty. Now_ this is quite a mistaken view of the position. The question is not one of punishment at all, but whether it is consistent with the best interests of Mie College that tho proBent occupant of that professorial chair should be continued in its occupancy. This is the real question, which it is the duty ot the Council to face without fear or favour, however irksomo it may bo to perform tha! duty unflinchingly. The Council is an administrative body, oxpreßsl.y entrusted with full power, and it is abfturd to argue as if they were tied down to technicalities of legal proceedings. On tho other band they are certainly under obligation to bo swayed neither by personal bias in favour' of individuals, nor by per sonal animosity against thorn. Fortunately, It is clear that the members of tho Council did not go into this troublosouio allair in any spirit of partizanship. If they have come to form a decided determination in the matter, it is simply because the facts of tho caso, in its entirety, have co led them, and with theso facts members of the Couucil aro necessarily more fully acquainted than outsiders in general cau bo. —Yours, etc., A Believer in Education.
