LADIES' VOCAL SOCIETY.
The concert in connection with the Auckland. Ladies' Vocal Society, held last evening in the Foresters' Hall, Newton, proved a thorough success. The audience were enthusiastic, and encores were frequenb. Mr J. H. Phillpob officiated as conductor with his usual ability, and JVHbs Adams did excellent work as accompanist. Tho first part of the programme consisted of Mr F. R. Rogers' pleasing cantata "The Elfin Chimes." The choruses were rendered with precision, the piano and forte passages being given in a manner that reflected credit on the conductor as well as the ladies. The soprano solos were charmingly sung by Miss Plummer, and Miss Wheeler was equally successful with the mezzo-soprano airs, being especially effective in the solo and chorus " With All Our Hearts." Miss Davies took the contralto solos pleasingly. The trio by these three ladies "Hark and Hear " with a chime chorus was one of the best numbers. The second parb of the programme consisted of miscellaneous items. The chief attraction was Mr W. Jude, who played Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" splendidly. Ho was twice encored, and finally sang his favourite song "Home, Boys, Home." Miss Coates and Mr Phillpob were encored for a pianoforte duet a Gigue in Gby Watson. Later on a pianoforte trio by Haydn was performed by Misses Harvey, Lomer and Coates, an obligato being played on the organ by Mr Phillpob. This item was also encored. Mr J. T. Carter was recalled when ho sang "Queenof the Earth," and favoured the audience with " The Skipper and the Boy." Mr H. Stebbing sang " The Arab's Farewell To His Steed" admirably, and upon being recalled bowed his acknowledgments. Messrs Carter and Stebbing also sang the duet " The Pilob Brave " (Millard). Miss Boyd was encored for a pianoforbe solo, which was a transcription of "Home, Sweet Home." Miss Davies sang Cowen's " Children's Home " very creditably, and, as an encore, further pleased the audience with "Oh, I< la'r Dove, Oh, Fond Dove." The final item was a part song, composed by Mr J. H. Phillpob, "The Dear Old Year is Dying."
