ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. — OPENING CUP MATCHES.
On Saturday the association players commenced their Cup matches on the Domain Cricket Ground. There was a fair number of spectators present. Two matches were played—Druids v. Alliance, and Rangers v. Rovers. The former game was rather one-sided, Alliance having by far the besb of ib throughout,but the Rangers v. Rovers was very well contested and was a very close match.
In Rangera v. Rovers, Stevenson kicked off for Rangers, and the game then alternated for some time between the two goals, Borne excellent forward rushes being made by bobh teams. Goals were kicked for Rangers by C. Heather (captain), Stevenson, and 'Manning ; and for Rovers by Phaney and Thomas (captain). The match resulted in a win for Rangers by three goals to two. . Alliance v. Druids. —Smith kicked off for Alliance and with Cantley kepb bhe ball well up to the Druids' goal, a goal being eventually kicked by Craig for Alliance. The game from this oub was almost wholly in favour of the Alliance team, bub Druids' forwards ahowd Borne excellent play. Seven goals in all were secured by Alliance, being kicked by Smith and Cantly, who both played splendidly. Several fine rallies were made by Druids at intervals, bub usually ineffectually. Two splendid shots ab their rivals goal were made by Evans and Nash for Druids in the Becondspell,but neither succeededin scoring. The game finished :—Alliance, 7 goals ; Druids, 1.
