NEWTON V. GRAFTON.

The following were bhe beams :—Grafton: Full-back, Taylor; three-quarters, Gaudin, McConnell, Clayton; halves, Whiteside, Brady; forwards, Caulton, Montgomerie, Bruce, Pennalligan, Biuney, Tracey, McMillan, Thomas, O'Brien; emergency, H. Barbon. Newbon : Fullback, Walton; three-quarters, Siddal, Major, Wilson ; halves, Davidson, Lowry ; forwards, Murray (2), Donald, Walker (2), Mills, Williamson, Beamish, Paul; emergency, Draffin.

Mr W. C. Speight acted as referee, and Messrs Sexton and Donaldson as line umpires. Newton won the toss and elected to defend the southern goal. Pennalligran kicked off for Grafbon, and Wilson returned into his own 25. From throw-in, Newfeon rushed the ball well up, and near Grafbon's 25 gob a mark. Donald took the kick, and Clayton returned to centre. Newton forwards gradually worked the ball up, scrums and throw-in being intermittent, when' Caulton marked and Davidson reciprocated into touch. Graf ton forwards got »i rush and looked dangerous, bub Mills kicked the ball into touch. Play kept in Newton territory, Graf ton being dangerous several times, bub were repulsed byNewtou backs. From an off-side kick, MuVray sent cut in Grafton 25, bub from throw-in Grafton forwards worked it back to centre. Some loose scrums took place, when Grafton gob a rush on, and, the ball going behind, Whiteside secured it. Penalligan book bhe kick and put a good goal. Grafton, 5 ; Newton, nil. Murray kicked out and McConueL returned, Walker marking, and he kicked into touch near Graf ton 25. centre. Loose play ensued from throw-in, Siddel and Taylor exchanging kicks. Play again came to centre. Newton rushed the ball up, all the forwards playing conspicuously, bub Grafton gob the ball back again. Play again came up to Grafton 25 through the superiority of the Newton forwards, and from thence fluctuated between the two territories, till Newton forwards got a grand rush on, and Grafton forced. Play still kept in Grafton ground and was of a loose nature, when Davidson gob a mark. Murray tried for goal, bub missed. Brady secured the ball and made a good fending run to Newton's 25, Walton bringing him down in fine style. From the throw-in Brady carried it up the line and Binney scored. The kick ab goal was a failure. Grafton, 7; Newbon, 2. Newton worked play well up again, and from a hard kick of a Newton forward the ball went behind. Taylor failed to geb ib, bub Davidson was successful. Donald took the kick, bub failed, and the whistle went) for half-time. Grafton, 7; Newton, 4. Newton got offside, and again spoiled Graf ton's free-kick, the ball going oub very near Grafton's goal-line, where ib stayed. Newton forwards appeared to rally, and made things lively for their opponents. Near Grafton's 25 Newton gob free-kick, which Murray took, but failed. Newton made ib lively for Grafton from kick-out, and theforwards made a succession of splendid rushes, Donald and Murray being prominent. Donald spoilt Grafton's throw-in, the ball going over the line; bub Taylor secured. From bhe kick, Grafbon changed the programme, and had the ball in Newton's territory, and the ball was rushed over, Whiteside scoring. Pennalligan increased the score by a good kick. Grafton, 12 ; Newton, 4. Things kept very lively from bhe kick-in, the play alternately fluctuating in both territories. Newton got into difficulties, and Walton had to force. Newton played loose from kick oub and the ball rebounding from Montgomerie, Caul, ton got over and scored. No goal resultedGrafton, 14 ; Newton, 4. Donald kicked oub and Gaudin made a good run to Newton's 25 before being grassed in return. Play came back bo centre. Newton forwards again made some good rushes and play fell back to Grafbon's 25. Some very exciting scrums took place right on Grafton line when from a throw in Siddel secured bhe ball and scored, No goal resulted. Grafton, 14; Newton, 6. From kick-off a Grafton man kicked off side,.and Donald, Gaudin, and Mills exchanged kicks. Play centred again in Grafton territory, when Newton marked, bub bhe kick was mulled, and play kepb near the cenbre. Newton forwards rushed play to Grafbon'a line, bub Gaudin saved by a hard kick. Newton were irreaisbable, and from a strong rush Lowry gob over the line and scored. Donald failed to add. Grafton, 14; Newton, 8. Play still kepb in Grafton territory, and Liddle made an effort to secure a good run, but he kicked into touch. From the throwin Walton marked and made a splendid attempt, bnb failed. Grafton had hard work to prevent scoring till the whistle; went, and the game ended Graffcon 14, Newton 8.
