BOARDING OUT CHILDREN.
AN INSPECTION OF THE HOMES,
Yesterday afternoon Mr C. Abkin, Chairman of bhe Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and Messrs O. Mays and H. T. Garrabb, two of bhe members, paid a visib to a number of bhe homes where the children are boarded oub by the Board. In all seven homes were inspected, conbaining 16 children in various suburbs, and bhe inspection of tbe remainder was deferred bill nexb week. The visibors will duly make a wribbon reporb bo the Board, bub from whab we can learn of bheir inspection yesberday, they were fairly satisfied, excepting in one instance. In bhis case, ib is stated bbab a child aboub fifteen months old was sleeping in a room wibh bhe woman wibh whom ib was boarded, and her son and daughber. None of the children are now boarded out ab Mr Sbickley's. As a resulb of the inspection so far, we think we are correct in sbabing bhab bhe bhroe visitors were of opinion thab a change in the present system of boarding oub is necessary, and no doubb bhe mabter will be thrashed oub at ono of bhe Board's meetings. Mr Mays has already publicly expressed himsolf againsb the children being boarded oub in bown, and he advocabes bhe counbry, where he bhinks they will be better provided for. It appears thab in mosb cases where bhe children are now boarded oub, the women only receive 2s 6d per week and rations tor looking afber them. .;t;-,... „ ________—__—-_____-_—_.—__— _%',2<B_Z
