WAIKATO NOTES.
(BY TELEGKAI'II. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Hamilton, this day
At i< meeting of the Waikato Hospital Woard held yesterday, it was resolved to employ a doctor solely for fcho Hospital, and to reside on the premises, tlio salary to bo four hundred a year, J3,nd_ pending erection of a residence, fifty, pounds a year to be allowed as house rent. Living away from the Hospital, however, ■will not fall in with the intentions of the majority of tho Board, who scorn to think lint, at night particularly, the doctor should be on fcho ground. If he lives in bis own house, this cannob be. Ifc was resolved to advertise for;a flesident surgeon all over New Zealand and in Sydney and "Victoria. The following contributions were evruck :— Piako County, £493 ; Waikato, £317 ; Waipa, £332 ; Raglan, £113 ; Hamilton Borough, £73 18s; Cambridge, £54 lls. ilr Coates said Hamilton could not afford k> pay their shave, which statement was received with grave doubts by the Board. The Ohaupo Sheep Fair took place yesterday, Mr McNicol beinj; the auctioneer. .About; ten thousand sheap were yarded, and V.fully 90 per cent., if not more, sold, withdrawals being scarce. From the King Country about rive thousand were yarded, .cooaiabine , of old merino owes and half-bred lambs. The ewea brought from 2s up to 4s 6d,tbe major portion averaging from half-a-crown to 3s. Lfttnba sold freely from 4=< to 7s, according to size and a»e. Fair quality, I reckon, brought all-round from 6s to 6s 6d, 7s 6d being- top price for half-breds, end 7s 4;i for Jonjfwoole. Half-bred lambs ■Jrom Mr Gillot'a, Cambridge, sold ab 8s 6d ■{or choice psns , , and 15 pens sold afc 7s 10-id, •800 in ail Large lots of ewes from Katawata and Lockerbie estates sold at 9s, feZi'l 7s 9d, and 7s 6d ; good-conditioned weifaers brought 10s 7d, 12s 2d, 12s 6d, and 32s lot fair-sized lots ; fat ewes rcuhsed 12s in'«inail lots. Altogether the prices, whilst nob receding, are not higher than those at recent fairs; but the quality of the stock offered was not such as to tempt purchasers. No doubt buyers today are on the right eido, and will benefit by their purchases. Fewer sheep were passed than nt any pre■vious big sale. At Ohaupo yesterday cattle sold freely at recent rate?, except very «young etoek, which showed a decline ami We not so much in demand. About 350 head were put through, none being passed.
