ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held to-day, Mr Bnrtt in the chair, and there were present : Colonel Carre, Mr Shakespear, Mr Wansbrough. Accounts.—Since the last meeting the receipts have been £1. and the payments £12 4s6d. Pkotkotiox of Piieasaxts.—Some tima arjo Mr Beattie proposed that settlers in tho country districts should be written to asking them if they did not think it would bo a good plan tor them to club together to preserve the pheasants, and subsequently to sub - lease the shooting. It was thought that the Society might, act as go-between. Mr Chcesoman wrote to several settlers and country societies, but the only answer received was read at to-day's meeting. It is from tho Secretary of the Port Albert Agricultural Society, and states that the settlers in that district are apt to think the pheasants a nuisance, buc that if properly worked the scheme proposed would probably be approved of. Pheasants were very numerous in the district, and the only doubt was anent the practicability of the scheme. Colonel Carre said he thought, if possible, the matter should be pushed forward. Hβ proposed that next year they should advertise for those who had shootings to let. Mr li. F. Flood wrote anent the hawks ab Mangawhara, which he stated were destroying- the pheasant?. The people would not trouble to shoofc them, but if a certain sum a head wero paid (3d was suggested) they would probably be induced to do so. Ho also suggested that certain insectivorous birds should be imported. A list of birds suitable was enclosed. It was agreed that the letter should be received.
