LONDON.
COLLECTION OF FUNDS.
FIGHTING THE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. THE SOUTHAMPTON RIOTS. The mob stoned the military during the riots at Southampton. They were dispersed at the bayonet point, several being , wounded. It is improbable that the original estimate of funds to be raised for the help of the Australian strikers will be realised. A thousand dockers have offered a composition in place of a weekly levy, and others are not working, this being the dull season. Some Unionists are suggesting that the strikers are rash, and had better settle their dispute. The Sunday collection only amounted to £30 for the whole Kingdom. The London dockers have £300 ready to send. Mr Mann, addressing tho strikers, eaid tbe strike did not show up in a favourable light-. Even if defeated the strikers would not be seriously injured, but it was their duty to support them. They could block one particular line of steamers, bub a struggle with the shipowners' combination meant
righting the whole capital of the world. Hβ stated he had cabled to Mr Murphy, secretary of the Sydney Officers' Association, for news.
Apart from the employers' statements the dockers admit the potency of the Shipowners' Association, and are afraid to useleesly jeopardise last year's victory by actively taking up the cause of the Australians.
The United Labour Council in London has remitted £280 to Melbourne and £500 to Sydney.
Australian - bound vessels are shipping coal to complete their loading. Messrs Burns, Mann, and Tillett have an interview to-morrow with representatives of the Orient, P. and 0., and British India Companies to induce them to promote a compromise over the strike. A force of military has been despatched to Southampton to preserve order.
