SYDNEY.

CONFERENCE OF EMPLOYERS

MANIFESTO BEING PREPARED,

ARRESTS FOR REFUSING DUTST.

MEDIATION FAILS.

THE TARAWERA.

The Tarawera expects to get away to day.

The Ohau is waiting for Newcastle coal. If she ia unsuccessful, she will proceed to Brisbane to load.

The Hauroto will probably leave in a day or two. The Company return all men who left the vessels to New Zealand in terms of their articles.

The officers and crew of a collier refused duty owing to the non - Unionists working the vessel. They were arrested, but subsequently on agreeing to return to work they were acquitted. Twenty-one firemen and three seamen on the British India s.s. Dorunda were arreeted for refusing duty. Cardinal Moran, while acknowledging the justice of the men's demands, thought it would be inadvisable of him to take any steps at the present juncture. So far there has been no result from the mediation of the Mayor, nor is there likely to be any unless the men are prepared to give in considerably. The conference of employers has paused several resolutions, but nothing has been made public.

It is understood the masters will stand firm on the question of employing Union and non-Union men together.

A sub-committee was appointed to frame the resolutions in the form of a manifesto, which will be submitted on Friday. It is also understood the Defence Committee hae ordered the Western Collieries to shut down.

The import market shows a better demand. A feeling is growing here that the strike is on the wane.

The Intercolonial Labour Conference begins to-day. At the invitation of Cardinal Moran, a deputation from the Labour Committee waited on him with a view of seeing if a settlement of the strike could be arranged; but the result was not made public. The Bayley has sailed from Newcastle for Wellington with 2,000 tons of coal.

A Home steamer which the Unionists re> fused to load with non-Union wool, coar pleted her loading and sailed.
