TURNING THE FIRST SOD.

Christchurch, this day.
The turning of the first sod of the Midland Railway at Springfield on Wednesday waß a great success, aboub 150 being present. Mr Williamson, one of the oldest residents, performed the ceremony. Speeches were made by Messrs Cunningham, Williamson* and Jebson.
