OPENING OF THE SESSION.

The Governor's Speech.

Wellington, this day. The promise of a fine day for the opening of Partiament is rather spoiled by the cold rain squalls from the south.

There has been a rush for tickets for the ladies' gallory for the ceremony this afternoon, interest being taken in the performance of Lord Onslow.

After the address notice will be given of the reply, the consideration of which the Government are anxious to have begun and finished to-morrow.

Barely half the members are here now> many depending on the usual adjournment till Tuesday, but the Government are prepared and anxious to go on with the business.

If no strenuous opposition is offered the reply will bo furnished to-morrow, when, it is" anticipated, the Financial Statement will be brought clown on Tuesday.

If objection is raised the Government will not oppose the adjournment.

Mr Harkness, the new member for Nelson, is to move the reply, but the seconder has not been decided upon.

Mr Humphreys ia mentioned, but is hardly likely to be here in time.

It is confidently asserted that no borrowing proposal will come from the Govern ment this session.

The election of Mr Humphreys appears to have given general satisfaction, Pie is considered to be a good man, with economical tendencies.
