BOARD OF REVIEWERS.
Messes S. Y. Collins, J. Newman, and F. Claude, the Board of Reviewers, sat to hear objections to valuations at the R.M. Court to-day. Mr J. B. Sboney, Clerk of the Court, and Messrs Cheeseinun and Eraser, on behalf of the Property Tax Department, were also present. S. Jagger, Grand Hotel.—The assessing of this? property was adjourned from yesterday to ailo\v the architect's certificate to be produced, showing the amount expended on the building up to October Ist.—Mr Duke, v/ho appeared for Mr Jagger, handed in the necessary certificate, and the price was reduced frcm £3,400 to £1,635 ; the last amount being the total expended to October Ist.
NORTH WARD. William Blandon, properties in Grahamstreet, £950. Mr Blandon objected Jto the high rate he was assessed at. Mr eraser said the property was nob over valued —Reduced to £900. William Blandon, property in Victoria.street, £900. Mr Blandon said again his property was over-rated — Reduced to £850.
James Braund, property in Graham and Custom? Streets.. £1,400. The valuator offered a reduction of £150. Mr Blades appeared on behalf of the owner for a further reduction. Mr Fraser said the property was nob assessed above its value. Captain Braund said, he would offer the properties to the Government for £1,050 — Reduced to the assessor's value, £1,250. James Braund, property in Durham-street, £700. Mr Cheeseman offered to take off £150. Mr Blades asked for a further reduction. Captain Braund said he bought the property in 1883 for £600, but he would leb tha Government have it now for £450, with the usual ten per cent.—Value sustained, £450. Mr Blades said he would leb the Government take the property. Mr Cameron, Hobson-street, £625. Mr Cheesemn said he was willing to make a reduction to £550, which JVlr Cameron accepted. Mr Cameron, the property lately used by the Auckland Agricultural and ! Mercantile Company, £3,600. Mr Fraser offered a reduction of £600. Mr Cameron cross-examined the assessor at length as to how he arrived at the value of the building. —Reduced to £2,500. Mrs Coombes, leasehold, in Lower Albertstreet, £1,500. Captain Daldy applied on behalf of the owners for a reduction to £1,200, the price paid for it eighteen months ago. Mr Fraser said thac the new Custom House had improved the value of the property. Reduced _to £1,200. Mrs Coombes, Chapel-street, £^50. Mr Fraser offered a reduction of £50, which Captain Daldy accepted. Mrs Coombes, Hobsonstreet, £3,300. Mr Fraser reckoned it a fair yalue. Captain Daldy considered, the valuation was excessive and cross-examined the assessor. Reduced to £2,500. Thomas Cotter, leasehold in Lower Albert-street, £1,500. Mr Cotter asked for a reduction of £500. Granted. J. Cotterill, Victoria - street, £2,640. Mr Vaile applied for a reduction. Mr Cheeseman agreed to a reduction to £2,200. J. J. Craig, Customs-street West, leasehold, £760. Mr Craig said it was greatly over-rated, while Mr Fraser said he reckoned it a fair value. Reduced to £500. Mr Craig said he would compel the Government to take the property. W. Dawinton, Dock-street, £550. The owner considered he was greatly overvalued. Reduced to £400. Hon P. Dignan, leasehold, Colonial Bank Buildings, £2,400. Mr Walter Di^nan appeared for the owner and asked for a reduction to £2,150. Valuation sustained. John Finlay. West Queen-street, x.%0. Mr Finlay stated his property was greatly over-valued, while Mr Fraser said it was a fair value. Reduced.
T. E. Fitzgerald, Wellesley - street, £2,000. The assessors offered a reduction of £100, but the owner wanted it reduced to £750. Mr Cheeseman said it was a very valuable property; he, however, would recommend a reduction cf £200. The Board reduced tho value by £100, bringing it to £1,900. S. Gelsfcon, leasehold in Customs-street West, ii2so. Mr Gelston objected, to the valuation; ha would take £100 for the buildin<>\ Mr Fraser recommended a reduction to°£2oo. Reduced to £150. |Mr Gelston said he would offer it to the Government. Patrick Gleeson, City Hotel, in Hobson- ' street, £6,G00. Mr Fraser said there '■ was some mistake in reference to this property. Mr Glesson said he | valued his "place at £4,000, which the valuator agreed to. Patrick Gleeson, (Ueeson's Hotel, leasehold, in Hobsonstreet. There was another mistake in this valuation, and Mr Gleeson agreed to £3.000, the amount assessed by Mr Frater. George Graham, property in Hobaon and Chapel-streets, £5,000. Mr J. B. Graham, on behalf of the owner, objected to the valuation on the grounds that it was assessed ab a much higher rate than properties in tho neighbourhood. After hearing IvJr Fraser the Bench decided to reduce the valuation to £4,000.
